Day 4: Thunder Bay to Winnipeg

Our day began bright and early in Thunder Bay with an unforgettable breakfast at Anchor & Ore, the restaurant at our hotel. The breakfast was nothing short of amazing—the breakfast tacos were packed with flavor, and the pancakes were perfectly fluffy and satisfying. It was the ideal way to fuel up for the day ahead.

As we crossed into Manitoba, we made a stop at the Centre of Canada Park, which marks the longitudinal midpoint of Canada. Standing at the center of this vast country was a special and symbolic moment in our journey. The park was beautifully maintained, with interpretive signage and picturesque views, making it a great spot to stretch our legs before the final stretch to Winnipeg.

Visiting Winnipeg

The evening ended on a high note at a potluck dinner organized by Gerri, where we were joined by many of our Winnipeg friends. The food was delicious, and the company even better. It was wonderful to catch up with everyone and share stories over a great meal. A big thank-you to everyone who joined us and made the evening so special!

We took a detour to drive through the Qu’Appelle Valley, we were struck by how unique this area was compared to the flat landscapes around it. The valley’s rolling hills, shimmering lakes, and lush greenery were a stunning contrast to the prairie’s endless horizon. We stopped to explore and take in the scenery, marveling at how this hidden gem seemed to appear out of nowhere.

For lunch, we stopped in Wolseley, a charming small town with its historic Swinging Bridge. Built in 1904, this suspension bridge is a unique and picturesque landmark, originally designed to connect parts of the town separated by a creek. We enjoyed a peaceful picnic lunch nearby and also visited Wolseley’s Opera House, another impressive piece of local history.

We arrived in Regina in the late afternoon and checked into the Holiday Inn Express. Dinner that evening was at Western Pizza, where we were joined by Janet and Glenda. The pizza was fantastic—rivaling even the best we’ve had in Quebec—and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the experience truly memorable.

After dinner, we visited the Provincial Parliament Building and took a walk around Wascana Lake, enjoying the peaceful surroundings as the sun set.

Next, we visited Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, where we went for a short walk in hopes of spotting buffalo. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate, and no buffalo were in sight. One unexpected hiccup was Nick getting a speeding ticket—something to keep in mind for anyone driving through Saskatchewan’s open roads!

Driving through Saskatchewan was an experience in itself. The flat terrain was unlike anything we’d seen before, with views stretching endlessly in every direction. If you’ve never been somewhere this flat, you’ll be amazed at how far you can see into the distance.

We arrived in Saskatoon in the afternoon and checked into the stunning Delta Bessborough, a historic hotel that looked like a castle on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. After settling in, we took a walk around downtown to admire Saskatoon’s beautiful architecture and lively atmosphere.
