From Toronto to Tofino in 17 Days: Part 1 - Thunder Bay, Wawa, and the Majesty of Northern Ontario

Embarking on a road trip across Canada is not just about the destinations; it’s about the experiences, the scenery, and the memories created along the way. This summer, we set out on an epic journey from Toronto to Tofino, eager to explore the stunning landscapes, vibrant cities, and charming towns of Central and Western Canada. Over the course of 17 days, we traversed diverse terrains, indulged in local delicacies, and connected with the natural beauty that Canada is renowned for.

In this blog series, we invite you to follow along as each day of our adventure unfolds, highlighting the unique stops and experiences that made this trip unforgettable. Whether you’re planning your own journey or dreaming of the open road, we hope you enjoy our recounting of the thrilling escapades and scenic routes that filled each day of this incredible road trip.

Jean-Luc and I have dreamed of traveling out west for years, and we always knew we wanted to make it a driving trip. Planning this adventure took some effort to align with our vacation schedules, but we were determined to make it happen. One of the key decisions we made was to rent a car instead of using our own. We ended up renting a Ford Escape from Thrifty, which allowed us to do a one-way trip—driving out west and then flying home. While it was a bit more expensive, it saved our car from wear and tear and gave us the flexibility to explore without the pressure of driving all the way back. By the end of the trip, we were exhausted, and not having to drive home was a relief. We highly recommend this approach for anyone considering a similar journey.

This trip wasn’t just for us, though. We were joined by my mom (or Nick’s mom, to be precise) and our friend Lynn. Growing up, Nick’s mom and dad had always talked about doing a driving trip out west, so leaving her out of this adventure simply wasn’t an option. Having Lynn join us turned out to be a great idea. It gave Nick’s mom some company during long stretches in the backseat or when she wanted to relax at the hotel while Jean-Luc and I explored. The two of them were able to enjoy the trip on their own schedule while we tackled the activities we had planned.

The route itself was carefully mapped out. Using Google, I researched must-visit locations across Canada and compiled a list of spots that could work within our timeline. From there, I created a detailed map, ensuring each stop made sense geographically and kept our daily drives manageable—seven hours being the maximum we wanted to handle. While some people asked why we packed so much into one trip, our goal wasn’t to see every location in detail. Instead, this was our “sampler platter” of Canada. We wanted to experience as much as possible so that one day we could return to the places that resonated with us the most.

This approach made the trip exciting, dynamic, and incredibly memorable. It allowed us to check off bucket-list destinations, enjoy diverse landscapes, and share unforgettable experiences. For us, this journey wasn’t just a trip—it was the realization of a long-held dream.

From Toronto to Thunder Bay: The Start of Our Western Canada Road Trip

Our journey west began with three action-packed days, taking us from the bustling streets of Toronto to the breathtaking beauty of Thunder Bay. Along the way, we experienced incredible sights, unexpected adventures, and unforgettable highlights that made this section of our road trip truly special.

Day 1: Toronto to Sudbury

On Friday, August 23, 2024, we officially set out on our adventure. After picking up our Ford Escape rental at Toronto Pearson International Airport, we hit the road at 6 PM. Our first stop was dinner in Port Severn, where we enjoyed a quick, relaxing meal before continuing north. By 11 PM, we arrived in Sudbury, where we stayed at Nick’s mom’s cozy home. The first day was all about laying the groundwork for what was to come, and we went to bed eager for the next leg of the trip.

Day 2: Sudbury to Wawa

Our second day began with an early start as we left Sudbury excited for a day full of scenic adventures on our way to Wawa.

Our first stop was in Sault Ste. Marie for a quick bathroom break and a chance to stretch our legs. From there, we continued on to the Agawa Rock Pictographs, where we completed a difficult hike and marveled at the ancient Indigenous artwork painted on towering cliffs overlooking Lake Superior. The history and beauty of this site left a lasting impression on us.

Next, we made our way to the iconic Wawa Goose, a massive statue welcoming visitors to this small but charming town. Just nearby, we stopped at the Lake Superior Scenic Lookout, where we enjoyed panoramic views of the sprawling lake and surrounding wilderness.

While taking in the scenery, we were approached by a friendly local gentleman who insisted we visit Scenic High Falls, a spot we hadn’t planned on seeing. Taking his advice, we made the short drive to the falls and were blown away. The sheer power of the cascading water surrounded by lush greenery was absolutely breathtaking. This unexpected stop turned out to be one of the highlights of the day.

After visiting the falls, we continued our journey with a quick stop at the Wild Blueberry Winery, where we sampled and purchased some unique, locally crafted wine. It was a fun and tasty addition to our day.

Finally, we arrived in Wawa and checked into the Lakeview Motel, where we would spend the night. While the owner was incredibly kind and we were fortunate to stay in the newer section of the property, the older part of the motel was quite rundown and a bit unsettling. The updated rooms provided a comfortable place to sleep, but we would caution future travelers to manage their expectations.

After settling in, we took a walk around Wawa Lake, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. During our stroll, we met a group of local boys who recommended we try Philly Wawa Hoagies for dinner. Following their suggestion turned out to be an excellent choice.

At Philly Wawa Hoagies, we enjoyed a hearty meal featuring lentil soup, a classic Canadian poutine for Nick, and a shared chicken shawarma. Each dish was spectacular, and the warm, friendly vibe of the restaurant made it even better. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with incredible sights and unexpected surprises.

As we headed back to the motel, we reflected on all we had seen and done. Day two was a whirlwind of exploration, and we couldn’t wait to see what Day three had in store as we continued westward toward Thunder Bay.

Day 3: Wawa to Thunder Bay

We hit the road bright and early, ready for a full day of exploration. The journey was packed with stops that showcased Northern Ontario’s natural beauty and unique landmarks.

We began with a visit to White River, the birthplace of Winnie the Pooh, where we learned about the charming origin story of the beloved bear. Next, we made our way to Pebble Beach in Marathon, a surreal coastline covered in smooth, colorful stones. It was unlike anything we’d seen before and felt like stepping into another world.

We headed to Nipigon, where we stopped at the Bridgeview Lookout Tower. From the top, we enjoyed panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, which were absolutely breathtaking. Feeling energized, we made our way to Ducky's Diner in Nipigon for lunch. The service was fantastic, and the wraps were delicious—a perfect refueling stop before the next leg of the trip.

After lunch came one of the most thrilling highlights of the day: Eagle Canyon Adventures, home to Canada’s longest suspension bridge. Despite her fear of heights, Lynn bravely joined us in crossing not one, but two suspension bridges. The views of the canyon below and the rugged landscapes surrounding us were incredible, making this stop unforgettable and a must-visit for anyone traveling through the area.

As we approached Thunder Bay, we made our final stop at the Terry Fox Monument, a powerful and emotional tribute to one of Canada’s greatest heroes. Overlooking the city, the monument reminded us of Terry’s strength and determination, leaving us deeply moved.

We arrived in Thunder Bay around 5 PM and checked into the Delta Hotel. To our surprise, the city’s downtown was alive with activity, and we stumbled upon Ribfest, a lively festival happening that weekend. We spent the evening exploring, sampling barbecue, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

As we reflected on the day, it was clear that the drive through Northern Ontario was a highlight in itself. The vastness, the rugged beauty, and the unique landscapes made this leg of the trip unforgettable. For anyone considering a road trip through this region, it’s an experience you shouldn’t miss—it’s a journey that will stay with you long after the trip is over.

Stay tuned for the next blog post, where we continue our adventure through Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
